As Luck Would Have It {I won something! – and made a new friend!}{37}
You know that every once in a while I like to tell you a story, right? Well. Here is a story for you.
Mr. Social Media and I have lived here in this house for just over 14 years. Not long after our oldest was born, my mother moved to the area. She used to live about an hour and a half away and now she is only 10 minutes from us. It’s great to have her around. It often comes in handy for babysitting. Our kids love to spend the night with her on the weekends. And, well, it’s nice just to know she’s not far off. It’s not uncommon for me to pass her on the road while I’m heading off to pick the kids up from school or, you know, heading out to the grocery store.
But. My mother has a doppleganger.
Sometimes when I’m driving around town (that’s misleading – it’s a very, very, tiny town). Sometimes when I’m driving through town, I see my mother’s car. It’s a pretty common make and model so I often see a car like hers, and it turns out to actually be someone else. The windows are a little tinted making it hard to see the driver and I am driving, so I usually just glance down at the license plate to see if it’s really her. Or not. Oddly enough, there is another car in my town – identical to my mother’s – with a nearly identical license plate – and the woman who drives it? She looks an awful lot like my mom. Same hair color. Same hair cut. Very similar clothing. Their faces are not similar. But everything eles? wow.
So. A few weeks ago, as I pulled into the parking lot of my local grocery store (my 10 year old was with me) I saw that car. Which car? Well, we couldn’t tell. He and I actually discussed it for a couple of minutes. We couldn’t see the face of the of the person in the other car. We went back and forth.
“Yes, that’s Granny.”
“Wait. No. I don’t think that’s her.”
“Oh, wait. That IS her.”
Well, no, it wasn’t my mother and as this other woman, that I have seen so often, was about to walk right past us ( i will admit to lingering at the back of my car for no good reason) I introduced my self to her. I tried hard to come across as very normal and not at all weird. ”Hey! You don’t know me, but. . .”
Fast forward to yesterday. I got a comment here on the blog from another blogger who said we might be “neighbors” because we both live in the Hudson Valley. (I am purposely a little vague about my exact location). Well, I recognized the commenter as the woman from the parking lot!! And what’s more – she has pictures of her house on her blog and I recognized her house as well. We are neighbors!! She is just around the corner from me. And, in fact, up behind my house, my property TOUCHES her property! I could go and visit her – without walking on a road. You can visit her too.
She is Claudia. Mocking Bird Hill Cottage is her blog. Please, go on over and say hi to her from me. SO many of her readers have stopped in over here today. We have to return the favor! Her blog is beautiful and she writes about life in the country with her husband and her 2 dogs. She looks to be a fabulous crafter. . . I can’t wait to explore her blog a bit more – and maybe even get to know her in person! I can do that. ’Cause we’re neighbors!
Visit Claudia on Facebook, too! And like her page!
While you’re at it, visit ME on Facebook and like MY page!
IN OTHER NEWS. . .

I am SO excited – I can’t even tell you!! I’ve entered so many giveaways for pretty things that I would love to have – but you KNOW how I feel about thigs being useful. Wow, great story and congratulations! I entered that contest too. Lucky you! I have already bought Tricycle, Luckett’s green (my fave) and the yellow. I’m going back to buy the off-white/linen color. If you haven’t used milk paint, be sure to watch her videos. Yesterday, I tried my new paints on an old board, just to see how they looked. Mixed the colors in little bowls in the dining room. Bad move! Because you have to stir for awhile and they were little cups, i had paint all over my shirt, pants, shoes, table, rug, and floor. Do yourself a favor and do it outside or use a blender as she suggests. Enjoy!!
Oct 04, 2012 @ 20:11:01
i will take that advice into consideration – i do have just a tiny bit of experience with the paint – i got to mix up a little bit of Lucketts Green (and paint it on a 6″ piece of wood which I brought home in my suitcase) at the Haven Conference in June. Were you going at it like CRAZY? Did you try to get EVERY LAST little lump out? I don’t think you have to . . . but I promise, I’ll be careful.
Oct 04, 2012 @ 15:49:06
You will love getting to know Claudia. We have been blog pals for some time now. You will find her to be intelligent and witty, funny and quite kind and inquisitive. Lucky you to have her so close by. So ladies, bake up some muffins and put the kettle on.

oooohhh. muffins!
Oct 04, 2012 @ 15:53:20
Hello, friend! I am still amazed by this whole thing. I’m sure you’ve read that Don and I drove by your house last night (because I was sure I’d figured out where you live and I was right!) I’ve always loved your house and we have walked by your property many times. It would be hard for you to walk to the house via the back way because our woods are so overgrown right now. But my project for next spring is to clear a path out, because I miss walking up our hill and looking at that expansive view.
I think we have to find time to get together soon! By the way, I’m very jealous of those doors. I spent a long day looking for a vintage door not so long ago and was very frustrated.
I’m still smiling. And I have to meet your mom some day.

It’s really nutty isn’t it?
So, I’m unclear on where our properties actually meet but what is your “expansive view”? WHich way are you facing? My field? Or up toward the mountain?
Oct 04, 2012 @ 20:54:24
Your field. The mountain is my expansive view facing the other way. But now things are so overgrown back there that when I’m facing in the direction of the field, I can’t see a thing except brambles and overgrown brush.

Hi Brieda!
Pat
I just saw Claudia’s post about your chance encounter…and how you are now blog neighbors after being real neighbors for so long and not knowing it!
Wonderful story.
I’m off to read more of your blog. So nice to meet you!
I don’t live anywhere near the Hudson Valley…so don’t worry…I won’t be stalking either of you!
Oct 04, 2012 @ 20:36:44
Ha! SO glad you will not be stalking. . . An I’m so glad you made it over to say hello!! Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment!

I had to head over here to ‘meet’ you. I still got me goose bumps from Claudia’s story..this is just awesome!!!
Oct 04, 2012 @ 20:37:36
yep, pretty awesome! such a teeny, tiny world we live in!
thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment! I really do appreciate it!

Oh Breida – that is such a cool story. How neat that all this time you have been neighbors. Sometimes, it just takes a leap of faith to put yourself out there and ask. I know out does for me at least. I was very timid and shy growing up, and have really only been able to let some of that go in the last decade.
I think with your love of red and enamelware you need to pick Tricycle as one of your MMS paint selections.
Oct 04, 2012 @ 20:39:43
how cool that you know about my love for enamelware and red! and yes, of course i will be getting tricycle!! i just have to pick the other colors! you know, since i WON these 4 – and i WAS planning to buy some. . . I could still buy a couple. . . ooohhhh! how exciting!
breida
Oct 05, 2012 @ 09:54:08
Oh yes…I think you may have mentioned it a time or two,
We’re birds of a feather in that sense, as I also love red and enamelware…I have a room in my home [not quite complete] that I decorated around a red/white/black quilt I made and handquilted and painted the walls red.
And I have a very large white enamelware basin with black handles and rim that I inherited after my husband’s grandparents passed away a few years ago. I quite literally rescued it, it was leaning up against the back side of the house half buried in mud.
You would love it….I’ll have to share a picture sometime.

Hi – I stopped by from Claudia’s to say hi. Small world, isn’t it?
Oct 04, 2012 @ 20:40:26
hi kim,
crazy, crazy, crazy small!!
thank you so much for taking the time to let me know you were here!
breida
Oct 04, 2012 @ 16:24:16
Oh, Breida! What a perfect giveaway for you to win. I believe you MUST get Tricycle ….the rest can be just about any of the others. They’re all beautiful.
Love the story of Granny’s twin! Can’t wait until they meet, too!
Love,
From Gracie and me
Oct 04, 2012 @ 20:42:42

can you believe i won this giveaway?!
so cool!

Oct 04, 2012 @ 17:30:45
Yaaayy you won! I rarely win anything and so when I do I’m crazy psyched. And that’s just too cool about your neighbor. When I have time later I will have to check out her blog. That’s just so crazy that she’s a blogger too…So weird. So…meant to be.
Oct 04, 2012 @ 20:44:17
very, very, strange indeed. i NEVER win stuff!
what a world!

Oct 04, 2012 @ 18:47:34
What fun for both of you.
By the way, whatever other colors you get, Luckett’s Green is b.e.a.u.t.i.f.u.l…..
Oct 04, 2012 @ 20:45:44
is that your favorite? i do like it, too. i’m even considering the Mustard Seed (and I don’t like yellow) – i really don’t think there is a color i dislike!! makes choosing all that much harder!

Brieda, it’s so nice to meet you. I’m a blogging friend of Claudia’s for several years now, and I read her story and now yours! You couldn’t have found a better doppleganger for your mother than Claudia. She is a doll.
My email on here apparently isn’t working. A friend told me the other day she clicked on it and ended up at some sort of religious college ad. Since I don’t do ads on my blog, I’m not clear how that happened, but whatever! My blog link should work, though.
Wishing you all the best with blogging. I’ve made some wonderful friends here over the years. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
XO,
Sheila
Oct 05, 2012 @ 10:24:10
Oops! I spelled your name wrong. I see Breida is spelled like Sheila. Is it Irish, too?
Oct 05, 2012 @ 11:45:41
Congratulations on your win! I so love this story, I follow both you and Claudia, so I had read about it on her site, and now “the rest of the story” on yours. You have simply got to really get to know each other “in the flesh”—it was meant to be, and how lovely for both of you.
Oct 05, 2012 @ 11:48:23
What a wonderful story of small town life! I miss living in an area like that! Colors? They’re all beautiful so pick 4 that you have a plan for and buy the two more in a “step of faith” color!
Oct 06, 2012 @ 23:00:07
ack! I’m just seeing your comment – and i still haven’t picked my colors – not because i can’t – i’ve just been too busy to sit down and think about it!
i’ll try and decide tonight before i go to bed!
i love my small town, too!
b.
Oct 05, 2012 @ 12:54:44
What?! That is insanely insane! Pretty cool. Definitely a small world! =]
Oct 06, 2012 @ 23:01:09

Oct 05, 2012 @ 15:13:45
What a wonderful story and so great to have a new friend in Claudia. You’ll have to make those muffins and invite Claudia and your Mom over to have coffee/tea with you. Congrats on winning the paint! I would be really excited too! I don’t think you can miss with any of the colors, though I have no experience. I am an artist and love all color!
Oct 06, 2012 @ 23:01:52
maybe Claudia will invite me over to her house cuz mune is too messy for comapany these days!!

When my husband and I were renovating our house in 1984 he said that there was no way we could have anyone come visit until we had the entire house finished. I laughed and told him that we would then never be able to have anyone over because it was going to take a very long time to finish. He thought it would be a 3 yr project which took 10 yrs or more. People who want to get to know you won’t care about the state of your home and also they are always very interested in seeing renovating in process. Find a little place in your home where you can sit down with friends. And take that time for yourself!
Oct 05, 2012 @ 23:03:01
It really is a small world, isn’t it? How wonderful that you are neighbors with Claudia. I have a similar story. I found a blogger who lives within a few miles of me. She recognized my husband and me from our pics on the blog, and she introduced herself to us in Sam’s. Congrats on winning the paint. I haven’t used it but tricycle looks awesome!
Oct 06, 2012 @ 23:02:48
i can’t wait to try the paint, Jane! I have to get busy and decide what colors to pick – ad send in my request. Tricycle will be one of them for sure!

Hello. I’m one of Claudia’s readers and wanted to pop over here and introduce myself. I love your story of meeting each other! I love how the universe works!
I’m looking forward to getting to know you via your blog.
Oct 13, 2012 @ 13:29:42
So excited you won that giveaway! I entered it too – and it’s just fun to know that someone I know won it! My favorite colors are the whites (of course!) and the red and flow blue. I ordered grainsack, tricycle, and flow blue. And no I do not have a patriotic idea to paint!
Oct 31, 2012 @ 22:00:08
What a fun story! And HOW EXCITING to have won!!!! I think I entered that giveaway too!
