Bookshelves Arranged by Color? {before & after}{23}

I guess I’m getting pretty bold about showing you pictures of the crazy spaces in my house.  I can tell you, that is a sure sign that things are actually starting to improve around here.  If everything is totally chaotic and I see no sign of getting it back in shape any time soon?  I’m probably keeping it to myself.  When I’m on a roll – whipping things into orderly submission on a daily (okay, let’s not get carried away) weekly basis?  I’m a lot more comfortable sharing the “befores”!!

sorry. i didn't get a picture with half the contents of my daughter's bedroom piled onto this chair...

As I told you in my last post, this area was included in the recent painting project.  In the photo above you can see the old wall color (Benjamin Moore’s Philadelphia Cream) and you can also see the messy shelves a little bit.  I’ll show you some more pictures of how messy they were in a minute.  How about that chair?  It’s too big for the space.  It’s old (almost 20 years old) and doesn’t have much character.  It comes with an equally gigantic ottoman (not pictured here).  There is a big rip where the cushion attaches to the back of the chair… You would think I would just get rid of it, right?  Well, it’s really comfortable.  Put together with the ottoman it’s pretty much a bed.  Both of my kids like to sit there wrapped up in a blanket and read (individually – not at the same time – Heaven forbid!) on weekend mornings while they wait for us to wake up. . . and so it stays.

For now.

Moving on.  My last blog post found me pondering how I would decide what to put on these shelves.  How many books – how much stuff – how to arrange everything.  I posted a question on my Facebook Page  the other day about arranging books on a shelf by color – and only a few people thought it was completely crazy.  Most objections were over not being able to find the books – but the truth is – if I’m looking for a book I’m much more likely to remember what it looks like as opposed to who wrote it.  So, arranging by color makes sense for me.  It might not make sense for you – but I’m pretty happy with how it came out.

How about some pictures?!

Before the project began, the shelves were just a jumble.  The majority of the jumble was books but those shelves really became a catchall for whatever little thing I had in my hands that I didn’t want to lose. . .

…and books.  This way and that way – with NO form of organization of any kind.

You might notice that I moved the chair out of the way for some of these photos – just so that you could see the whole bookshelf.  It was only for the photo – I put it back when I was done.

So, if you do a google search for bookshelves arranged by color – you’ll find a few different ways of going about it.  Since I didn’t want to fill the shelves with books, but rather mix in some of my collections, I decided not to go with just one color per shelf.  I shopped through the giant pile of books on my bedroom floor and just put them into groups (by color) on my bed.  Then I just went back and forth from the bed to the shelves – grabbing a few books of the same color – or color family – and placing them on the shelves.  I tried to leave room for adding in some do-dads and knick-knacks.  Once I had a good number of books on the shelves, I shopped the rest of the house.  I looked for whatever small objects I thought might work.

What do you think?

So.  This little section of the house is finished.  For now.  It’s making me smile every time I go upstairs.  Having this space finished gives me a little sigh of relief.  For me, a finished space is like a cool washcloth on a fevered head.  That’s my current goal – to get all more of the spaces in my house to this state.  I’m no designer – you know I’m not here to tell you that you should do things the way that I do them.  (you DO know that, right?) I’m not telling you my way is the right way to do anything – it’s just the way I’m doing it.  I’m just hoping it might make you smile, too!

So tell me – is there a space in your house that is like a fevered forehead?  Or makes you feel like you have a fever? I want to hear about it!  Do you have a cool washcloth plan?  I want to hear about that, too!!
