get lost! {or totally losing it…}{26}
Well. Hello there.
No. I don’t mean that I want you to get lost. Please. Don’t do that. What I’m meaning to say here is that I got a bit lost. I think I have figured out how to get back. . . but I’m not sure I’m quite there yet.
Can you hear me, now?
Good. I guess I’m almost there.
The past few weeks have been a challenge for me. I’ve been lost in a number of different ways. First of all, I am having a very hard time accepting the fact that summer is over – though it clearly IS over. Even I can see that. And yet I seem to be lost between the two seasons. I’m not feeling the usual anticipation and excitement for cooler weather and beautiful scenery. In addition to that – or perhaps the two are actually related, my kids started a new school this year. I think the kids and I are missing old friends and familiar traditions. . . I am floundering a little. I think the kids are doing okay but it’s never been easy for me to make friends. . . it never occurred to me when we made the decision to change schools that I would have to find my place in a whole new community. . .
You’ve noticed that things have been a bit quiet here on the blog? That is another place that I’ve been lost. This was my first summer as a blogger. Having my kids with me during the summer is one of my favorite things about being a stay-at-home-mother. But I’ll tell you this – every blog post that I was able to produce during the months of June, July, and August was written between midnight and 4am. I knew that I could not keep up that schedule and stay awake while I drove the carpool and I started putting myself to bed at midnight . . . Blogging MUST happen during the day! So as soon as the kids were back in school I started cranking out the blog posts, right?? Wrong. Just before school began, we started the renovation of two of our bathrooms. I am SO excited to be doing over these two rooms. . . I can’t even tell you. As it turns out, having a construction crew in my house daily for weeks on end is even more disruptive than taking care of two rambunctious children!! I thought hiring this work out was going to leave me free to do my own thing. . . I was mistaken. Tomorrow I return 160 square feet of the wrong color tile to Lowes. . .
Do these all sound like excuses? I’m honestly not trying to make excuses. I just thought I’d share a little of what’s been keeping me from getting to you. I wonder if anyone is still listening!
are you still listening???
Here is some good news. As of yesterday, the bathroom on the first floor is FINISHED. Well, at least all of the work to be done by the contractor is finished. (Which reminds me: Do shower curtains come in different sizes?) I have a few finishing touches to take care of on my own – and then I’ll be able to show you the beautiful results. It’s nice to have two fully working bathrooms in the house again. There were a few days when the four of us were down to one. . . we managed fine . . . but two is SO much nicer. And, in another week or so, we will be back to three!! (and all of the construction chaos will be over!!)
So, what can I do to get myself into the swing of things again? Well, we live in apple country and each Fall, at our old school, I’ve looked forward to an apple picking field trip. I don’t think we will be doing a school trip this year but I can certainly take the kids myself! I love apple picking! (Really I love apple cider doughnuts. . .) And then there is a school potluck coming up soon. I’ll bet I’ll meet some other new parents (and established ones, too) and start to feel more involved with this new community. Even just since yesterday (when the 1st bathroom was declared finished) I’ve made some real progress in getting the house put back together. What a mess!!
Okay, I’ll stop talking now. I know that you mostly tune in for the pretty pictures and I hate to disappoint you, but. . . in an effort to get over the blogger’s block I’m suffering, I’m going to post this post without any artsy, edited photos. I did get a new iPhone last night though – so I’ll wow you with my improved mobile capabilities! Don’t get too excited - I got the 4s. I’m just not tech-y enough to go for the 5. (Guess what Mr. Social Media pre-ordered on our trip to the AT&T store last night, though).
a little damage from the storm last night. . . a wonderful pine scent from these needles all over the street
looking the other direction - toward my old barn. . . not really any Fall color yet - i keep checking. . .
I’d say these pictures are not bad for a phone! No editing – just resized them to fit the blog format.
I’d love to know if you’re still here! Please – leave a comment and just say hello! I promise to bring you some fun project and giveaways VERY SOON!! Leaving a comment is easy and I read, enjoy and respond to every one of them.

I can totally relate to the busy-ness! My blog has been being pushed to the background too. I’ve been posting, but don’t have the time I’d like. And I haven’t had time to visit many blogs. Fall is busy, I think, and then come the holidays!
Yay for your bathrooms! And best wishes on finding your place in a new community!

Yes, it seems that Fall is VERY busy! And Christmas is JUST around the corner!! YIKES!
Thanks for stopping in, Deborah! Nice to hear from you.

Hi!
Sep 20, 2012 @ 12:43:01
Hi to you, too!
Sep 20, 2012 @ 06:52:49
Your blog makes a nice read as the sun comes up and my nyc bus chugs from Kingston through rosendale and on to new paltz. I identify with the surprising effort involved with finding your place in the new school community. This year is our second year at our new school. Colin has made lots of new friends for us since last year at this time!
Sep 20, 2012 @ 12:44:25
Wow, Pauline – are you doing that commute Daily?? I’ve ridden that bus from NP to NYC many times (but not as many as you, I bet). Thanks for leaving me a note! Much appreciated.

Not daily, once a week, which is plenty for me!
Sep 20, 2012 @ 12:29:11
I’m still here, and I’m glad you are, too! When does life get not busy? I’ve been struggling to find the time to blog, too, and to comment on all the blogs I love to read. I keep saying, once I get finished with X….
Life gets in the way sometimes, doesn’t it?
Can’t wait to see the bathroom.
Sep 20, 2012 @ 12:45:53
Thanks for your words of encouragement, Amy! I guess we all need them sometimes! The downstairs bathroom is beautiful and the upstairs bathroom is going to be a show stopper!!

So glad to hear from you on your blog! Awesome that one bathroom is done! My husband & I renovated a 1907 Bungalow which we just sold last Nov. after living there for 27 years. I think our bedroom was in almost every room in the house at some point. Also the dynamic in the change of seasons and especially kids going back to school is huge! Take care of yourself!

Thank you, Linda. I really appreciate your taking the time to comment today. When we renovate our 3rd bathroom (eventually), we will have to move out of our room for a while. . . I’m telling Mr. Social Media that it would be a perfect time to redo our bedroom as well! I want to take out the ceiling and vault it up the attic. . . sounds reasonable, right??

Don’t even worry about it, everyone gets domestic block sometime. I enjoyed the photos of the trees today ,I’m from Ct., and Vermont I now live in Florida and miss the fall folliage amongst other things. Can’t wait to see the fall colors come out in the trees, don’t forget to share your photos with us.I can’t believe I’m buying leaves to decorate with when I had so many at my fingertips in the past. I know what you mean about transition, much harder for adults than children. I just started a blog on e bloggers. Sweet Tea N’Salty Air. I have allot to learn. Don’t worry you will make plenty of new friends!

Thanks, Lisa! I love that!! Domestic Block!! Ha!!
I promise to share plenty of pictures of the pretty leaves when they get going! I’ll pop over and check out your blog, soon! Thanks so much for reading and taking the time to leave a comment – Have a wonderful day!

Hey! I want a barn in my backyard too! Why did you guys switch schools? My half bathroom renovation isn’t done yet. We haven’t even really worked on it since my last post about it! GR! Hunting season started here and that’s what my husband has been occupying his weekends with. How responsible!?!?! Haha I’m totally kidding – he loves this time of year and so do I. Honestly, the half bathroom downstairs not being in service really isn’t putting us into any kind of crisis or anything. It’s just a door that we keep shut for now. Hopefully it will get done soon though! The family that we have living with us right now is actually moving into their home next weekend so maybe we can tackle our bathroom then. When there aren’t so many other people in the house. =]

Runt –
you told me that you grew up in Hawaii, right? But you don’t live there now, right? Whenever you comment, I always picture you there. . .
Do people hunt in Hawaii? What would they hunt? It doesn’t seem like a hunting climate.
We switched because it was time –
Thanks for dropping in!

Hey Breida! I did grow up in Hawaii but I don’t live there anymore. I left there about eight years ago. You can still picture me there though and I will do the same! =] People don’t hunt in Hawaii. Not on the island of Oahu anyway – there isn’t that kind of wildlife out there. You could fish though! There’s plenty of ocean and fish out there, that’s for sure!

Hi there! You’re in the home stretch, girlfriend…and OF COURSE I’M STILL HERE, silly! Friends hang around…and pick up right where they left off…when the time is right. xo

Tiles are going down on the floor today (walls are already done-ish). SO exciting!!
Sep 21, 2012 @ 12:41:34
Breida – I was feeling the same as you – I was sorry to see summer go and not quite ready for Fall which is my fav season of the year. Altho I’m beginning to suspect that summer is quietly overtaking fall as my favorite. What I did was to post “What I did on our summer vacation” pictures on facebook – that was good closure. Then we went apple picking last week and that got me right in the mood for fall. So I say go get yourself some apples (and the delish donuts too!)
Sep 21, 2012 @ 12:49:10
Sounds like a plan, Stan!! I do have a post planned about looking back on our summer – I guess I should whip that up (any day now). And listen, if summer and fall are BOTH your favorites – that’s like, HALF THE YEAR!! That’s great! Thanks for stopping in, MaryHelen!
