I’m Not a Mantle But I Play One in the Hallway{27}
So the Fall decorating continues. As I travel through my first year as a blogger, I am a little amazed at all of the creativity that I see. I find it fascinating that we are all doing a similar thing (decorating for a season or a Holiday), but each of us is doing something just a little different than the next person. Right now the blogs are full of the colors of this current season – and they really are beautiful colors. I’ll tell you this: if it weren’t for all of the beautiful displays I’ve seen in the last few weeks – here on my computer screen – I would never have managed to get any Fall decorating done this year. I never would have been motivated to dig my way out from under the construction debris in time to pin up a single pretty yellow leaf or fat little pumpkin. Making these pretty little scenes in my house is part of what makes it feel like a home. Okay, so I guess it always feels like a home – but sometimes? Sometimes I like my home a lot more than others!
- it’s much more lovely in person! the lighting in this area does NOT lend itself to beautiful photography!
I spent some time today designing this little vignette around a piece that I painted a while back. We have a few of this type of box in our house, which I would normally call a blanket chest, but this one was actually a tool box. (we keep blankets in it – so it really IS a blanket chest, now) I found this in a shed at my husband’s grandmother’s house about 15 years ago. It was painted black when I first saw it. It also had rope handles on the sides and wheels on the bottom. The wheels are still there. The handles? No. Well, we all make mistakes. . .
This box is as solid as a rock. And it’s as heavy as a rock, too. Someone built this thing by hand – pine boards. Thick ones.
I really did like the black paint but it was in pretty rough shape and I was on a kick of painting everything off-white at the time. I was thrilled with the way it came out – and I still love it. First, I covered the whole box with one coat of grey primer and then I put on a second coat of regular off-white latex paint. I had to sand the edges to achieve that distressed look I wanted. But really, the box itself got me more than half way there. If you’re after the chippy look – look no further!
And even though it seems to have been through the wars, I still think it’s stunning.
This particular box means more to me not only because I love the way it looks, but because it is quite useful as well. I do love things to be useful. In a house without closets, you need all the extra storage space you can get! There is also the added bonus of having belonged to Mr. Social Media’s grandfather. Beauty, Utility, and History all rolled into one. What more could you ask for?
Well, if you’d ask to see how I made the broomstick, come on back again. I’ll be doing a tutorial for that very simple project in a day or so! Wow! That is lovely. Can’t decide which element I like best… The bunting or the “shadow boxes” or the arrangement of gourds and pumpkins… To say nothing of your wonderful storage chest.
Oct 20, 2012 @ 10:16:59
I had to laugh when I saw that blog post you sent me last night! Did you notice the “shadow box” in that one was just the same as mine? (only a lot smaller)
I’m pretty sure they are actually topsoil sifters. . . I got mine at a antique fair kind of a thing in Ocean Grove this summer.

yes, indeedy! I wondered which came first, the other blog post or your arrangement! In either case, it is a really nice way to display with the texture of the screening at the back.

by the time i saw the post that you sent me – my decoration had already been done and photographed – i just hadn’t put the post up yet! I also LOVE all of the red cross stuff. . . oooohhhhh that First Aid box!!

Oh, Breida! I love that chest! I love items passed down through family…chipped or not. Your vignette is simple (as opposed to overstuffed) and welcoming. Beautiful!

Well then, Welcome to the upstairs of my house! This is right at the top of the main staircase – a spot that is usually covered in what ever has just been carried up the stairs. I like this arrangement a LOT better!

Breida, I’m sure I would not have gotten ANY fall decorating done in the midst of remodeling projects! I love your chest. I am looking for a similar one because I live in an old house with one closet! Maybe I should look for old tool boxes! I think that first photo is stunning, by the way!
Oct 20, 2012 @ 20:03:11
Well, Jane, the projects are coming to a close. Slowly. But surely. thankgoodness!
Thanks for the compliment on the photography. I was nearly in tears trying to take nice pics of this display. . . the light was sooo bad. I actually rigged up a pole and a construction light (stolen from the ongoing project in the next room). It was a nightmare!

What a wonderful chest, made much more so by the history. I love and cherish things that are handmade, simple things made by hardworking hands, not precious, lovingly carved, fancy antiques (I like those, too), but things obviously made to serve a purpose, plain and sturdy and built to last a lifetime. Just Beautiful. ,
Oct 21, 2012 @ 00:59:29
Yep. I have to agree with you. Things that were made to serve a purpose (and that can continue to do so) while looking great. . . that’s what really floats my boat! Thanks for stopping by and letting me know you were here! I appreciate it so much!

Your box is a keeper for lots of reasons, gives you a great base for a little show also. It looks like it could withstand pretty much any kind of abuse. Your tablescape on the box and wall is so cute and love that broom.
Look forward to seeing the post about it.
Every time I see a broom now I think of the commercial in the broom factory with the gal flying around cackling. Pretty smart ad.
Enjoy the Fall and the gorgeous colors. It’s pretty here (western CO) but western KY where we used to live was breathtaking. Had some woods close by and what a show every year. Was a bad allergy season for me there but still loved the Fall colors.

Hello there! Thank you so much for taking the time to read and comment! That area at the top of the stairs looks so nice right now – it gives me a smile every time i go up there. It really is worth taking the time to do a little something special – and it really didn’t take all that long. (honestly it took my longer to get any decent pictures that it did to do the decorating!!)
thanks again,
breida

Anxiously awaiting the tutorial on the broom!! Love your blanket chest, and the natural “chippy” effect someone gave it:) I have an old traveling trunk with the big rounded lid, it’s in storage as I’m not sure what to do with it, as my home is pretty tiny, and unless the furniture has a dual purpose, it stays in storage along with many many beautiful things that I can’t /won’t sell for various reasons. Not quite a hoarder!!! And yes, I understand large/small old homes that don’t have closets. It’s frustrating, but people in those days did not have the clothes nor the “stuff” we have! Hence two storage sheds and a basement full of “stuff”!!
Oct 21, 2012 @ 20:52:16
Hi Nina-
I’m hoping to have that broom tut. up tomorrow. (or rather very late tonight)
The good thing about using those dome lidded trunks for storage is that you can’t really pie stuff up on top of them – and you can actually get to the stuff inside!
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to let me know you were here! I love hearing from readers!

I love that toolbox/blanket chest! I actually have the person spot for one downstairs but I need to find out first. I have been scouring yard sales and Craigslist but nothing yet. My time will come! =]
