I’m wondering if it makes me sound like an old person when I say, “Every year the time seems to go by more quickly.” It sounds, even to me, like something and old(er) person would say. That doesn’t change the fact that it’s true. My theory is that as we live through more and more years – each successive year is proportionally smaller. . .you know, compared to your whole life. A year for my son is one tenth of his life while a year for me is only one thirty-eighth!! of my life. So it makes sense. The whizzing, zinging, lightspeed rate at which time is coursing by me. That makes sense. . .
Which is to say: I can’t believe it’s Friday already!
Last week I said – here on the blog – that I would post each Friday about something I’ve made. I’m so pleased to be able to show you this coat rack that I finished this afternoon. I’m very pleased with the way it came out. But I am even more pleased that I was able to complete the project totally on my own. I’m not sure if you care but this was a really big accomplishment. The coat rack is not a complicated project. It did involve some tools that I’ve never used before though – and to be honest – I usually leave all woodworking to Mr. Social Media (he’s also very handy – really – how lucky can a girl get?) Earlier in the week I got to a point in the project where I thought I needed advice and help. Unfortunately, the two of us couldn’t find anytime in the last few days to be in the barn (where the tools are) together so that he could give me a hand.
This morning i realized that the project just wouldn’t get finished in time. And I felt that I had failed myself. Overdramatic? Truth.
Well, guess what? I decided to just move ahead. Make it happen. Even if it didn’t come out exactly like I had pictured it in my head at least I would have made the effort.
It came out EXACTLY like I had pictured it IN MY HEAD!
maybe even better. . .
While I was making this one I worked on two others. They’re a bit different than this one. Maybe I’ll show them to you next week! I’d love to know what you think of the coat rack. I had a great time making it – I think I may have found a new addiction. . . If you’re looking for me – you’ll probably find me out in the barn. . .

so, what was the mystery tool that you had to use and were afraid of. Nice work!
Mar 24, 2012 @ 16:50:58
not a mystery – i used the chop saw –(compound miter saw) – really not scary at all – just never did it before. The part I was stuck on was attaching the molding. I thought I should use glue as well as nails but I couldn’t find the right size nails and it seemed like maybe I should use a brad nailer (also never used) to make it come out neat. . . In the end I just nailed it on – I stole some tiny nails from a picture hanging kit (not for the project shown in the post but another one i was working on that has VERY small trim) and I put them in with a hammer! it was easy as PIE!

I LOVE IT! I wish I was handier and knew how to use woodworking tools. The last time I did was in shop class at Woodlawn Middle…..do you remember our shop teacher? I don’t remember his name, but I kinda remember his face. If I were to try and use our woodwrking tools now, I’d have to go out to the garage…with the spiders….no thanks.

I DO remember him. Very well. His name was Mr. Prismont – such a nice man. And I was just talking about shop class last night. Arguably my most favorite class I ever took in school. Loved woodshop. Can’t wait to see what else I can make!

Are you really making something every week?? Blogging, posting to pinterest and making something, each week — and hot dogs to boot! Seriously, Breida! I can make a mailbox out of a shoe box for a small child. That’s it. Love the coat rack!

thanks, Karen! Yes. Making something each week IS the goal – I’m off to work on something else right now!
Pinspired and Produced #12 {DIY vintage yardstick coat rack}
Jul 04, 2012 @ 15:24:20
[...] My big brother is having another little baby. Thank goodness, because I’ve been itching to hold a little tiny one recently. In the invitation to the baby shower, there was a request made for the contribution of any vintage yardsticks the partygoers might be willing to part with. Now, I do have a stash of vintage yardsticks. They are old and most of them are advertising pieces for long gone local businesses. It was an amazing estate auction find. Whether I would be willing to part with them is, as they say, a whole ‘nother story! I know the plan was to create a yardstick chair rail in the baby’s room, but I was looking for an excuse to build something . . . and this is what I came up with. I have indeed, seen something similar on Pinterest. . . and I did another version of this row of hooks, as one of my very first projects. [...]
