Progress on Painting the Kitchen {and some house history}{19}

Okay – so remember the crazy picture of my crazy kitchen from yesterday’s post?  Did you happen to notice a strange dark patch on the wall at one end of the kitchen?

I know.  You are distracted by the blinding glamour of my 20+ year old refrigerator covered in…. everything.  But look at the space under the window on the far right.  Any one have any guesses as to what that might be?  Here’s a better look.  With less distractions.

And a closer look…

So.  I guess maybe there are a few different things that you could guess that might make sense.  This is how it looked when we bought the house almost 16 years ago.  I happen to know what it was because when we first moved in there was an old iron hand pump just to the left of it.  The pump was attached to a pipe that went down through the floor (maybe someday I’ll tell you about what’s under my kitchen floor!)

We removed the hand pump a long time ago – but clearly – there was a sink (of sorts) here where the bare spot is.  There happens to be another one – in another room – on the floor above this one.  I imagine this one looked something like that one…

So.  For the most part, the bare patch has been covered up by some piece of furniture or other and I’ve never felt compelled to paint over it.  And.  I’m a little fascinated by the history that it shows.  I love the fact that there was some piece of wood that has NEVER been painted in all the years of the house – and you can see by the paint next to the bare patch that a LOT of paint has been applied to most of the wood here over the last 165 years.

Don’t worry.  I had my kids tested for lead every six months until they were 5.

I think I may have also discovered some original milk paint on the wall.  I hope this isn’t boring you to death.  I actually find it pretty thrilling.  It was actually kind of hard for me to paint over this bare patch!  I kept stopping and taking more “before” pictures!

Another section of the kitchen finished!  Sorry for the night time photo but believe me – I was painting at ALL hours to get this project done!  You know what the real bear in this project is, right?  It’s painting those windows!

One down.  Three more to go….

WISH ME LUCK!!  And don’t forget to check back in for more progress and a final reveal!  I’ll bet there will be Christmas decorations!!!!!
